Project will be ready for use by high school and other athletic events this fall but the overall project featuring new high-intensity lighting and artificial-turf fields won’t be completed until later in the year. Aug 17, 2010 – Thanks to the securing of a $1 million Essex County Open Space grant, Monsignor Owens Park swill soon be home to Nutley’s first athletic venue fitted with synthetic turf and featuring high intensity lights suitable for both sporting and other community events. Owens Park, located on the eastern end of Park Avenue near River Road, is the most utilized facility in Nutley with scheduled activities by high school varsity tennis, soccer and lacrosse teams in addition to dozens of year-round programs sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Nutley, New JerseyMayor Joanne Cocchiola, (mayorcocchiola @ nutleynj.org) Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli and the Greenutley Committee recently announced plans to hold a Rain Barrel Workshop at the Nutley Farmers Market on Sunday, August 29th. The workshop will focus on teaching the community the benefits of having a rain barrel, as well as constructing a barrel from common items that can be purchased at a local hardware store.

This is one of many educational ‘green’ workshops that the Greenutley Committee would like to bring to our community,” commented Mayor Cocchiola. “Having an operational rain barrel for your home or business has many obvious benefits. We are excited to bring this information to our residents,” .

Why I Love Nutley

My favorite event in Nutley is the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade that is held on Franklin Avenue each year. I love that the whole town is just packed down onto the main drag to have some fun. There are kids, grown ups, street drinking, but none of the knuckleheads that come to ruin Hoboken or Belmar. It’s great to see a bunch of people having fun without becoming jerks.

Nutley Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – December 6th

Let’s Usher in the Nutley Christmas Season

Mayor Cocchiola and the Board of Commissioners announced the annual Holiday Lighting. Festivities will take place on Sunday, December 6th from 5pm to 7pm. Nutley’s whole downtown will be ablaze with holiday spirit, with activities inside John H. Walker Middle School and areas in and around the Nutley Park Oval. In order to allow everyone to enjoy everything, Franklin Avenue will be closed between Chestnut and New Streets and Chestnut Street will be closed between Franklin Avenue and Vincent Place.
